MOU signed between EdUHK’s HPE and FSD to provide joint training course on emergency care and critical response
EdUHK and the Fire Services Department (FSD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 2 October to establish a collaborative partnership in organising a training course on the fundamentals of emergency care and critical response. The course will be jointly provided by the Fire and Ambulance Services Academy (FASA) and EdUHK’s Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE).
The training course will equip students with the skills and knowledge to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs), as well as fire safety measures, emergency evacuation procedures and handle environmental emergencies. It is designed to further enhance the preparedness of youngsters in the community in case of an emergency, and elevate the overall efficiency of life-saving treatments.
The FSD has long been actively formulating and implementing strategies on community emergency preparedness, while the HPE has been dedicated to nourishing future sports teachers and talent in sports-related services. The collaboration will help further promote the “three basic skills on emergency preparedness”, namely Extinguish and Prevent Fire, Self-help and Help Others, and Escape and Evacuate. It also spreads knowledge of emergency procedures throughout the community and schools, and cultivates the culture of “self-help and help others” in the wider community.
Witnessed by Professor Susanna Yeung Siu-sze, Associate Vice President (Quality Assurance) of EdUHK, and Mr Yiu Men-yeung, the Commandant of the Fire and Ambulance Services Academy, the MoU was signed by Professor Li Wai-keung, Dean of FLASS and Mr Terry Wu Sit-hung, the Deputy Commandant (Ambulance Services Training) of the Fire and Ambulance Services Academy.
Professor Yeung expressed her gratitude to the FSD for its unwavering support for the training course. She said the collaborative course would be included as a credit-bearing course in the curriculum of the Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Physical Education) programme and the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sports Science and Coaching programme of HPE. Students who have completed the module will become members of the Resuscitation Alliance who pledge to give a helping hand in cardiac arrest cases. She hoped the course would enhance students’ vigilance and problem-solving abilities in the case of an emergency and embody a spirit of mutual assistance and care among the community.
Mr Yiu expressed that the training course would enhance students’ competence and confidence in assisting people in the community who suffer cardiac arrest, ensuring they receive timely treatment so as to increase their chances of survival. The MoU also signifies a sustainable partnership in providing diverse learning opportunities in emergency care and preparedness for young people.
A visit to the Fire and Ambulance Services Academy was organised for academic staff from HPE. Joining the visit included acting head of HPE Dr Andy Tse Choi-yeung, Dr Lobo Louie, Dr Bob Sun Fenghua, Dr Kevin Kam, Dr Gary Chow, Dr Claudia Wong, Ms Wang Sha, Ms Carmen Chan, Dr Eva Kwok, Ms Ruby Chen and Mr Tom Siu.
